Japanese Horror Games: Ghosts, Curses and J-Horror
Japanese horror games tend to frighten with ghosts, curses and quiet wrongness more than monsters to shoot. These are games set in Japan or drawn from its ghost stories and urban legends, plus the classics from Japanese makers that shaped the genre.

For ghost stories at their purest, start with Fatal Frame. In Maiden of Black Water you search Mt. Hikami, a mountain of shrines and suicides, and your only weapon against its drowned spirits is an old camera; Mask of the Lunar Eclipse sends girls back to the island where they lost their memories as children, and the 2026 remake of Crimson Butterfly follows twin sisters into an abandoned village where night never ends and the ghosts are looking for twins. Silent Hill f moves the Silent Hill series to a fog-covered Japanese town in the 1960s, with a schoolgirl, red flowers spreading through the streets and a story by Ryukishi07.
If you like to read and investigate, Japan's horror visual novels are a genre of their own. PARANORMASIGHT, from Square Enix, ties a deadly curse to the seven old ghost stories of Tokyo's Honjo district, and its standalone sequel, The Mermaid's Curse, moves to an island in Ise Bay where curses fall after a young pearl diver meets his double on the sea floor. Spirit Hunter: Death Mark and its companion Spirit Hunter: NG send people marked by curses to hunt the vengeful spirits of urban legends at night, and Spirit Hunter: Death Mark II takes the Spirit Doctor undercover at a Tokyo academy where one wrong choice in front of a spirit kills. Ryukishi07's own When They Cry sound novels are where his reputation began: Higurashi When They Cry, whose first chapter is free on Steam, spends a summer in the village of Hinamizawa in 1983, where someone dies and someone disappears every June, and Umineko When They Cry sets a chain of murders on a family's private island while a self-proclaimed witch claims the blame. Urban Myth Dissolution Center is a pixel-art occult mystery about debunking or confronting modern urban legends through social media posts and witness accounts. Emio – The Smiling Man, Nintendo's return to its Famicom Detective Club series, is a murder case built on an urban legend: a student found dead with a smiling paper bag over his head, like the victims of a killer from eighteen years before. Corpse Party traps high school students in Heavenly Host, a haunted school in another dimension, and is known for how grim it gets.
The small pixel-art RPG Maker games from Japan are classics of indie horror: Yume Nikki, the free 2004 game in which a girl who never leaves her room walks through door after door of strange dreams; Aooni, the official remake of Ao Oni, where a blue demon chases four classmates through a mansion; Ib, in an art gallery whose paintings come alive; The Witch's House, a girl trapped in a house where almost every step can kill; and Mad Father, in a mansion where a doctor's experiments escape. Yomawari: Night Alone sends a little girl with a flashlight through her night-time town full of spirits, and Yomawari: Midnight Shadows splits two friends after the summer fireworks and takes each through the same kind of haunted night; Yomawari: Lost in the Dark, the third, sends a cursed girl through her town at night in search of her lost memories. Misao, remastered in 2024, drags a school into an otherworld of violent spirits after a bullied girl goes missing, and Corpse Party: Blood Drive returns to Heavenly Host to close its story. The Crooked Man, the first of Uri Games' Strange Man series, follows a young man into a new apartment and the trail of the man who lived there before. Hollow Cocoon, set in a 1980s mountain village, has you hide from a tall, ghostlike creature in an old mansion.
For something short and modern, The Exit 8 traps you in a looping passage of a Japanese station where you must spot the anomaly, Chilla's Art's Parasocial follows a streamer whose real face is exposed to her chat, and the man who keeps turning up after, and Clock Tower: Rewind brings back the 1995 Japanese classic in which a girl hides from the Scissorman.
Chilla's Art, a small Japanese studio, makes short, low-poly horror games rooted in everyday Japan, most of them under two hours. The Convenience Store is the one to start with: a student takes a night shift for its unusually high pay, and the night goes wrong. The Closing Shift does the same in a cafe where someone may be watching, and Night Security has you lock up a building floor by floor where the last guard never came back. Aka Manto and Hanako turn school ghost stories into hunts, Aka Manto with one life and no saves. Shinkansen 0 puts the anomaly rules of The Exit 8 on a bullet train, and Inunaki Tunnel walks you to a real, notorious sealed tunnel through a VHS camcorder. Shadow Corridor, by another Japanese maker, sends you through shifting corridors haunted by the curse of a Noh mask, where you run or hide from what roams them; Shadow Corridor 2 follows a girl named Shigure through new pitch-black corridors that change each time you play. WORLD OF HORROR, made in Poland but drawn from Junji Ito, sets its 1-bit roguelite mysteries in 1980s Shiokawa as the Old Gods wake.
Four more for readers of the visual novels and fans of the anomaly games. Corpse Party: Book of Shadows returns to Heavenly Host Elementary as an anthology of chapters, some replaying the first game's deaths from another view and some letting you escape them. Raging Loop strands a young man in a mist-bound mountain village during a feast where a werewolf hides among the villagers, and the villagers are hunted down one by one. The Song of Saya, from Nitroplus, follows a medical student who after a car crash sees the world as rotting flesh, all but one girl. Platform 8 is the Exit 8 maker's next game, on a commuter train that never stops.
Akai Onna is a short new one in the same vein as Chilla's Art: a student walking home late passes a woman in a red dress, and from that day feels someone's eyes on him in the quiet streets and his small apartment.
If you only try one, play Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water for the ghosts, or Ib for the creepy quiet of Japan's indie classics.
