Horror Games for Beginners: Where to Start if You Scare Easily
If you are new to horror games, or you love the mood but not being chased, start with games that unsettle more than they shock. These are short, gentle in their controls, light on gore or built so you can turn the danger down, and each is still a real horror game.

-
PsychologicalPARANORMASIGHT: The Seven Mysteries of HonjoA horror mystery told through dialogue and choices, with quiet ghost stories and only a few jump scares.
DREDGE is the gentlest way in. By day it is a fishing game about sailing a small boat, catching fish and upgrading your hull; the fear only creeps in at night, when panic rises, your eyes play tricks and strange things move in the water. You can always head back to port.
If you want to dip a toe into scares, The Exit 8 takes fifteen minutes to an hour: you walk a looping underground passage and turn back when something is wrong. It is mostly quiet unease, with a few sudden anomalies. The Cabin Factory works the same way for about an hour and costs very little: you walk through one log cabin after another and press Danger if anything moves. Home Safety Hotline is just as short and has no monsters chasing you at all; you answer callers worried about what is in their homes, looking up the answers on a 1990s computer, and the horror grows in what you read and hear. It even has toggles to hide images of spiders and insects.
Ib is a classic first horror game: a few hours in a pixel-art art gallery whose paintings have come alive, with only movement and one button to learn. It is creepy and tense rather than gory. Little Nightmares has no combat and no gore to speak of, just a small child sneaking and hiding from grotesque adults in a dark, beautiful world. They Breathe is a half-hour taste of the same mood: a small frog swimming down a drowned forest, wordless and unsettling rather than shocking.
When you are ready for real survival horror, Crow Country is the friendliest door into it: a PS1-style mystery in an abandoned theme park, whose Exploration Mode removes the monsters' attacks so you can learn the genre at your own pace. Sorry We're Closed has gore and demons but a bright neon style and humour that make it less oppressive than most. The Midnight Walk is a dark fairy tale made of clay, with grotesque monsters and tense hiding but no gore.
Firework is another calm first step: a 2D police investigation in a Chinese mountain village, solved through puzzles, whose makers promise no jump scares, nowhere to hide and barely a ghost on screen. The fear is in the story of what happened to one family.
If you prefer reading to running, PARANORMASIGHT is a horror mystery visual novel told through dialogue and choices, quiet scares and ghost stories, with a few jump scares along the way.
Start with DREDGE or The Exit 8, then try Ib and Little Nightmares, and move to Crow Country when you want to fight back.
Questions
What is a good first horror game?
DREDGE and The Exit 8 are easy ways in: one is a fishing game with a dark undercurrent, the other a short walk through a looping corridor. Ib and Little Nightmares are good next steps.
Are there horror games without jumpscares?
DREDGE, Home Safety Hotline and Firework rely on mood and slow dread rather than sudden scares; Firework's makers say it has no jump scares at all. Most others on this page have only a few.
Is there a survival horror game with an easy mode?
Crow Country has an Exploration Mode that removes the monsters' attacks, so you can play its puzzles and story without the danger.
Are these games suitable for children?
Not necessarily. Gentle for horror still means dark themes; check each game's content notes before playing with younger players.
