Games Like Alien: Isolation: One Hunter You Cannot Kill
Alien: Isolation puts Amanda Ripley on a failing space station with one alien that hears you, learns your habits and cannot be killed. These games share its fear of a single hunter you can only hide from, and many keep its isolated stations, bases and retro-futurist machines.
The games
9 of the 13 games in this guide are not on Linux and are left out. Show them all.
-
PsychologicalSOMAFrictional's sea-floor station where half-machine things stalk the corridors and you can only hide and run.
-
SurvivalMonstrumOne of three monsters you cannot fight stalks a randomly built cargo ship.
-
SurvivalDuskersDark derelict ships seen through drone feeds and a motion sensor that cannot tell you what is out there.
-
SurvivalOutlastNo weapon at all: hide in lockers and under beds, as on Sevastopol, in a madhouse full of killers.
Amnesia: The Bunker is the closest in how it hunts you: one creature stalks a First World War bunker by sound, and every noise you make, from a dynamo flashlight to a gunshot, can draw it to you. SOMA, from the same studio, moves to a research station on the sea floor where half-machine things stalk the corridors and you can only hide and run. Monstrum puts one of three monsters on a randomly built cargo ship, and Still Wakes the Deep strands you without a weapon on a 1975 oil rig in a storm, its crew remade into hunters.
For more of the Alien universe, Alien: Rogue Incursion is built for VR, with a motion tracker chirping in your hand as Xenomorphs move through the vents. ROUTINE keeps Isolation's retro-futurist look on a silent lunar base built to an 80s idea of the future, where machines hunt you and you move without map markers.
The cold works as well as space. The Thing: Remastered returns to the Antarctic outposts of John Carpenter's film, never sure which of your squad is the alien, and FROSTBITE: Deadly Climate, free on Steam, leaves you in a powerless arctic base that you are not alone in, while the cold drains you.
Two more keep you on a ship or station with something you cannot see coming. Prey sets you loose on Talos I, a station overrun by the Typhon, where small Mimics hide as a mug, a chair or a medkit and leap out at you, so no room is safe. Duskers strips it down to a motion sensor: alone in deep space, you steer drones through dark derelict ships by typed commands, seeing only failing camera feeds and a blip that says something is there but not what.
If it is the hiding you love, Outlast is the classic of having no weapon at all: a journalist in a madhouse with only a camcorder's night vision, hiding in lockers and under beds.
With friends, CRYO sends up to four technicians into abandoned Antarctic labs full of mutated creatures, and Species: Unknown has up to four mercenaries track an intelligent monster aboard a derelict spaceship with a motion tracker.
If you only try one, play Amnesia: The Bunker for the closest hunter, or SOMA for the station and the story.
