Monstrum is a first-person survival horror game set on an abandoned cargo ship that is rebuilt at random every run. You search for the parts of an escape route while one of three monsters hunts you, and death is permanent.

About Monstrum

Monstrum was made by Team Junkfish, a small independent studio, and released on Steam in 2015, later coming to PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch in 2020. It mixes classic hide-and-run horror with roguelike rules: the ship's layout and its items change every time, and dying sends you back to the start.

You wake aboard a rusting cargo ship and must find a way off. There are several escape routes, a lifeboat, a helicopter and a submarine among them, and each needs tools and parts hidden somewhere in the cabins, cargo holds and engine rooms. On each run one monster is aboard: the Brute charges through corridors, the Hunter moves through the vents and the Fiend makes the lights fail as it nears.

The fear comes from not knowing. Doors creak, alarms can be set off, and the monster follows sounds. You hide in lockers and under beds, throw objects to draw it away and watch the security cameras and corridors before moving. Because death is final, every decision matters, and a long run that ends a room from escape is part of the game.

It suits players who liked Alien: Isolation or Amnesia's helpless hiding and want something replayable and unpredictable rather than a fixed story.

How to play Monstrum

  1. Wake in a cabin and explore carefully; the ship's layout is new on every run.
  2. Find the escape routes and read what each needs to be repaired.
  3. Search rooms for tools and parts, carrying what you can.
  4. Listen for the monster; hide in a locker or under a bed when it comes near.
  5. Throw objects to draw it away, then move on quietly.
  6. Repair one escape route and leave the ship. If you die, you start again on a new ship.

Tips

  • Learn each monster's habits: you are told which one it is only by meeting it.
  • Close doors behind you; you will hear if they are opened.
  • Avoid running when you do not have to; noise brings the monster.
  • Keep a hiding place in mind before you enter a dead-end room.
  • Flares, glow sticks and the lighter matter more in the dark lower decks.

Questions

Can you kill the monster in Monstrum?
