About [Chilla's Art] Hanako | 花子さん

Hanako (花子さん, Hanako-san) is a survival horror adventure by Chilla's Art, the Japanese two-brother studio behind Aka Manto and Yuki Onna, released on Steam for Windows in December 2020. It is longer than most of their games, about 2 to 4 hours depending on skill.

Three fifth graders enter their school well past curfew to curse a fellow student with the ritual of Hanako. Suddenly Hanako is after them, and they are separated. You play one of the three and must find the others and fight your way through Hanako's hauntings, trapped in a school bound by her curse.

The school is non-linear, with roaming enemies and a stalker, characters with dialogue, puzzles and obstacles, and boss fights. The makers say the game will not hold your hand: you have to search areas carefully and use everything at your disposal. Unlike Aka Manto and Yuki Onna, it is not a one-life game; there is a manual save system, so a death does not cost the whole run.

There are multiple endings. It suits players who liked the school setting of Aka Manto but want a longer game with more fighting back and saves, in a J-horror movie atmosphere.

1. Buy it on Steam or itch.io for Windows.
2. Explore the cursed school at night as one of the three students.
3. Search each area carefully for items and the way past puzzles and obstacles.
4. Fight through the hauntings and bosses, and watch out for the roaming stalker.
5. Save by hand as you go, and find the other students to reach an ending.

Tips

• Use the manual save often, so a death costs you little.
• Scan each room carefully, the makers say the game will not point the way.
• Keep track of your health bar before going into a new area.
