What frightens Walking home at night after hearing that a girl from the next school has vanished, junior high student Rina slips into an eerie, fog-bound version of her town, where something chases her through the empty streets while she looks for the way home.

Content: chases.

The Night Way Home is a Japanese survival horror game by Chilla's Art. Junior high student Rina takes her usual way home after a girl from a nearby school goes missing, and finds herself in an eerie world where something chases her through foggy streets.

About [Chilla's Art] The Night Way Home | 帰り道

The Night Way Home (Kaerimichi) is a 2021 horror game by Chilla's Art, the Japanese studio known for short VHS-styled horror. Its makers describe it as Japanese survival horror and say plainly that it is not a walking simulator.

Rina, a junior high school student, hears that a girl from the next school over has gone missing. On her way home that night the familiar route turns strange: she ends up in an eerie world of fog, empty roads and dim streetlights, with an enemy that hunts her. The task is simple to say and hard to do: find your way home without being caught.

You can play in first or third person. A danger bar at the top of the screen warns when the pursuer is near, and you save only at payphones, so getting caught can cost progress. The store warns that the game can be very challenging for players who struggle to stay calm in frightening situations, and estimates two to four hours depending on how you play. The VHS look, with tape noise and a jittering CRT, can be switched off in the options.

Steam reviews are mixed. It suits players who want a longer Chilla's Art game built around chases rather than the studio's usual short first-person shifts, such as The Convenience Store or Night Security.

Tips

  • Use every payphone you pass: they are the only way to save.
  • When the danger bar appears, break line of sight before you stop to think.
  • Try both camera views; third person makes it easier to see what is around Rina.
