The Convenience Store (夜勤事件, roughly "Night Shift Incident") is a horror game by Chilla's Art, the two-person Japanese studio known for short J-horror games, released on Steam in February 2020.

You play a female college student who lives alone and takes a part-time job at a convenience store because the hourly wage is unusually high. She works the night shift, and over the night she runs into a series of strange and frightening supernatural events. The makers describe it as mainly a walking simulator with puzzle-solving: you move through the brightly lit shop and the dark streets outside, doing the job and dealing with what happens.

The environments are photo-realistic and inspired by Japanese horror films, and by default a VHS filter covers the picture with the trail, bleeding, noise and jitter of an old CRT screen; it can be switched off in the options. There is a good and a bad ending, and a run lasts about 40 minutes.

In 2026 Regista brought the game to Nintendo Switch and Switch 2. The publisher says that version adds a new ending not in the PC game and a mascot, Chillamaru, hidden around the map, whose collection changes things inside the store.

It suits players who want a short, slow-burn Japanese horror story set somewhere ordinary and anyone who wants a quick taste of Chilla's Art's night-shift stories.

1. Buy it on Steam for Windows, on itch.io, or on the Nintendo eShop for Switch.
2. Start the night shift as the student and learn your way around the store.
3. Walk through the store and its surroundings and follow what each part of the night asks of you.
4. Solve the small puzzles along the way and see the night through to one of the endings.

Tips

• Turn the VHS filter off in the options if the noise makes it hard to see.
• Play with headphones in a dark room; the game leans on quiet and atmosphere.
• It is short, so play again for the other ending once you finish.
