What frightens You never go down yourself: from a control room you follow a squad of soldiers into an abyss under the earth through a status monitor, a radar and a radio, and the fear comes from their transmissions breaking up as strange anomalies are reported and something ancient stirs below.

Below, Rusted Gods is a first-person horror game from FromSouthGames in which you are the operator behind an expedition into a newly found abyss. You watch the squad's status, read the radar, scan radio frequencies and guide them down, while their messages grow strange and something ancient waits below.

About Below, Rusted Gods

Below, Rusted Gods was made by the independent studio FromSouthGames and released on Steam in July 2026. You play the operator of a critical mission: a team of soldiers is descending into an abyss that is believed to lead to uncharted places beneath the earth, and your job is to monitor their progress, keep them safe, collect data and guide them based on what they send back.

You never see the descent with your own eyes. You sit in a control room with a status monitor, a radar, a radio that scans several frequencies and other equipment, and you read the instruments and answer the squad's transmissions. The maker's own line puts it plainly: you are not the hero, you are the voice they trust. Between calls you also move around the facility, which is part of the game.

The horror is in what reaches you second hand. The briefing warns that strange anomalies have already been detected and that communication may become sporadic as the team goes deeper. Voices break up, readings stop making sense, and the store promises something ancient and eager to be born at the bottom. The store pictures show dim offices, a wall of switches and a radar screen, a corridor torn open by a mass of cables and flesh, and a shrouded figure standing in a red-lit room.

It suits players who liked guiding someone else through danger over a radio or by instruments, as in Static Dread: The Lighthouse or Iron Lung, and who prefer a slow build of dread to constant chases.

How to play Below, Rusted Gods

  1. Start a new game and read the mission briefing from the operator's desk.
  2. Watch the squad's status monitor and the radar as the team descends.
  3. Scan the radio frequencies to pick up their transmissions and answer them.
  4. Use what the instruments and the squad tell you to choose how to guide them.
  5. Between calls, look around the facility for anything that has changed.

Tips

  • Play with headphones: much of the game reaches you as voices and static over the radio.
  • When the squad goes quiet, check the other stations and the facility rather than waiting at the radio.
  • Camera shake can be switched off in the options if it bothers you.
