What frightens Hordes of hundreds of Freakers pour through canyons, sawmills and caves after you, and at night the woods fill with them; a single wrong turn on your bike can end with a swarm at your heels.

Content: gore, intense violence, strong language, drug references, sexual themes.

An open-world action game by Bend Studio set two years after a pandemic turned most people into Freakers. You play biker and bounty hunter Deacon St. John, scavenging parts, crafting weapons and fuel, and riding the wilderness of the Pacific Northwest. The fear comes from the hordes: hundreds of Freakers moving as one, faster than you can shoot.

About Days Gone

Days Gone came out on PlayStation 4 in 2019 and on PC in May 2021, made by Bend Studio and published by PlayStation. A remastered version for PlayStation 5 followed on 25 April 2025 with better graphics and new modes.

You play Deacon St. John, a former outlaw biker who now hunts bounties in a forest, mountain and lava-field wilderness two years after the outbreak. You search abandoned towns and camps for parts, craft bandages, bombs and weapons, keep your Drifter bike fuelled and repaired, and do jobs for survivor camps while human gangs and the infected fight over what is left.

Its horror is the horde. Freakers wander alone or in small packs by day, but in places they gather by the hundred and move as a single flood of bodies. Stumbling into one, or being chased through a dark mill by one at night, is a real fright, and clearing one takes planning, traps, chokepoints and a route out. Night, rain and snow change how they hunt.

It plays as a long story-driven action adventure rather than a horror game you hide through: you are well armed by the middle of it. It suits players who want an open world to roam with the undead as the main threat and the tension of a horde that can swallow you.

How to play Days Gone

  1. Ride your bike between camps and missions, watching the fuel gauge and repairing it with scrap.
  2. Search buildings and wrecks for parts to craft bandages, molotovs, traps and ammunition.
  3. Sneak around or fight Freakers and gang members.
  4. Do jobs for survivor camps to earn credits and trust for better guns and bike upgrades.
  5. Scout a horde before you take it on, set traps and pick a route to fall back along.

Tips

  • Always park your bike facing an escape route; a horde will not wait for you to turn around.
  • Refuel whenever you pass a gas can or pump.
  • Avoid hordes until you have upgraded weapons and plenty of explosives.
  • Move around at night with care: more Freakers are out and they are bolder.
