What frightens You step into the mind of a ruined novelist, Othilie Wynne, where her characters have become rotting, deformed flesh and resent the woman who wrote them; grotesque faces, skulls and bodies in dithered collages of paintings and war photography.

Content: gore, disturbing imagery, war photography.

Funerama is a free point-and-click horror game played in the browser. You enter the mind of Othilie Wynne, a once-successful novelist, as it falls into ruin, and meet the characters she created, now trapped in flesh in their maker's final nightmare.

About Funerama

Funerama is a browser game by the French maker Thibault Rivera, made in Construct and free on itch.io, with an original soundtrack by Viktor Kraus. The maker calls it a point-and-click adventure into the sick mind of a novelist, and its page says no generative AI was used.

Othilie Wynne was a celebrated novelist, obsessed with the darkest corners of modern literature. A newspaper clipping in the game's opening tells of her prize; what follows is her inner world after it slowly fell apart. Paper turns into flesh, and the strange cast of her books, trapped in the last nightmare of their creator, talk to you as a visitor, perhaps a reader, who has come too late.

You walk, read, inspect, put on masks and drift away through scenes built as a handmade collage of classical paintings, film stills, war photography and more, all rendered in black-and-white dithering. The look is the main source of unease: grinning faces with too many teeth, skulls and skeletons in a tunnel of rotting matter, candles guttering over stacks of her books.

It is a short, quiet game of dread and grotesque images rather than chases or jump scares, and players describe it as unsettling at first and sad by the end. It suits players who liked the paintings of Time Is Solid Here or the photo-collage nightmare of Antumbra, and anyone who wants a horror game that reads like a dark literary story.

How to play Funerama

  1. Open the itch.io page and press Run game; it plays in the browser with a mouse or a touchscreen.
  2. Click to walk from scene to scene through the novelist's mind.
  3. Inspect objects and read the clippings and book pages you find; they tell who Othilie Wynne was.
  4. Talk to the characters you meet and listen to what they say about their creator.
  5. Use the mask and drift away actions when they appear to reach new places.

Tips

  • Read everything: the story is told through clippings, books and what her characters say, not through cutscenes.
  • Play with sound on; the soundtrack carries much of the mood.
  • Some players report the game stopping after the drift away action; if it does, reload the page and try another browser.
