What frightens You walk a dark suburban house at night collecting cassette tapes that lecture on the anatomy of houses, as if a house were a body. As you go deeper the rooms grow wrong, the picture glitches and distorts, and the game keeps suggesting that something waits behind each door without ever giving you the release of a jump scare.

Content: distorted and flashing images, body horror, strong horror themes.

A short first-person horror game by Kitty Horrorshow. You explore a dark suburban house, find cassette tapes that describe the physiology of domestic architecture, and listen as the house you are standing in starts to fit the description.

About ANATOMY

ANATOMY is a short experimental horror game by Kitty Horrorshow, an independent maker known for strange, lo-fi horror. It is sold on itch.io for Windows, macOS and Linux, and its maker estimates a play of 30 to 45 minutes.

You start in a dim house with an old tape recorder. Somewhere in the rooms are cassettes, and each one is a calm spoken essay on houses as living things: what the kitchen, the basement and the bedroom are to a home the way organs are to a body, and what a house might want from the people inside it. You find a tape, go back to play it, and set out again for the next one.

The house is nearly empty and very dark, rendered in a low-detail style broken by glitches and distortion. The horror comes from anticipation: the critics quoted on its page describe it whispering that a monster is probably in the next room and then denying you the scare, so the tension builds instead of breaking. Later the game changes what you think you know about the house, and the maker says it has multiple endings and is meant to be played more than once.

It suits players who like quiet, unsettling horror about everyday places, and anyone who finds a dark house at night frightening on its own. Players looking for chases or monsters will find little here; the maker warns of distorted and flashing images and body horror.

Tips

  • Play at night with headphones and the lights off.
  • Listen to every tape to the end; they are the story.
  • When the game seems to be over, try again; the maker says one play is not the complete experience.
  • If flashing or distorted images bother you, be aware that the later parts use them heavily.
