What frightens You play a man on his last night alive as he obsesses over a mysterious painting; his apartment fills with static-filled televisions, grim prompts and disturbing pictures, and the store warns the game handles suicide explicitly.
Content: suicide, violence and gore, sexual references, disturbing imagery.
the static speaks my name is a free, ten-minute first-person game by the whale husband in which you play a man on his last night alive, obsessed with a mysterious painting. It is dark, sad, strange and sometimes funny, and its horror comes from the man's state of mind rather than from anything chasing you.
About the static speaks my name
the static speaks my name was made by Jesse Barksdale under the name the whale husband and released free on Steam and itch.io in August 2015, for Windows, macOS and Linux. Its maker calls it a dark, sad, weird and funny first-person exploration game, more a story game than a game of skill, and the same studio later made Bucket Detective.
You play a man on his last night alive as he obsesses over the meaning of a painting. You walk through his small apartment and do what the screen tells you to do, one key at a time: some prompts are mundane, some are grim, and the rooms around you do not stay ordinary. A corner of stacked televisions hisses with static, a family photo has been defaced, and an old instant-messenger window asks things it should not.
The fear is quiet and personal. There are no monsters to run from; what unsettles is how flatly the game presents a lonely man's last hours, with jokes and a tank of pet shrimp beside the darkest material. The store warns that it handles suicide explicitly, and the developer marks it for violence and gore.
It suits players who want a short, unsettling story they can finish in one sitting, and who are ready for its subject. The maker suggests playing with the lights off and headphones on.
