What frightens In Zanzibar in 1896, army doctor Jake Huntington investigates a disease that threatens to exterminate humanity and may not be natural; in a gamebook of text and hand-drawn plates, you read of piled, twisted bodies and of corpses that died bleeding from the eyes, while the story asks whether something supernatural is at work or you are going insane.
Content: disturbing descriptions of death and disease.
Omen Exitio: Plague is a Lovecraftian adventure in the style of 80s and 90s choose-your-own-adventure gamebooks. As Dr. Jake Huntington, an army doctor in 1896, you investigate a disease that threatens to exterminate the human race, and your choices decide the story, your character and the fate of the world.
About Omen Exitio: Plague
Omen Exitio: Plague is a text adventure by Tiny Bull Studios of Turin, Italy, released on Steam in March 2018 and later on Switch and iOS. It is inspired by the choose-your-own-adventure gamebooks of the 1980s and 1990s.
Zanzibar, 1896. You are Dr. Jake Huntington, recently enlisted in the army to forget the loss of your wife Helen. Every hint you find points the same way: a terrifying disease threatens to exterminate the entire human race, and its origins may not be entirely natural. To understand it and stop it you must go into the shadows at the edge of human intellect, through intrigues meant to keep the truth hidden. And always the same question gnaws at you: is there something supernatural in this, or are you going insane?
You play by reading and choosing, in a story of more than 140,000 words with over 300 hand-drawn images and an original score, laid out as a leather journal, a character sheet and a map. You develop Huntington through RPG-style skills such as fighting, observation, medicine, agility and speechcraft, which open different ways past each obstacle. There are no right or wrong answers, and death is only ever a narrative event, never a defeat screen; but the store warns that some consequences may be worse than death.
A playthrough takes four to six hours, and there are several endings to find. It suits readers who like slow, literary cosmic horror and branching stories such as Sunless Sea or World of Horror.
