A short horror micro-game by CatTrigger, made for the O2A2 jam in exactly 1,000 words. A pilgrim chosen by their village reaches the Great Prophet for the final ritual of ascension, and she may not be who she says she is. Several endings, free in the browser.

About PROPHET

PROPHET is a horror micro-game by CatTrigger, the maker of VESSELS and Morris, made in Unity for the O2A2 jam, which limits each game to one character model, one environment, one soundtrack, one sound effect and 1,000 words, built in ten days. PROPHET uses exactly 1,000 words, and the maker calls it their most ambitious entry. It plays free in the browser on itch.io, with pay-what-you-want downloads for Windows, Mac, Linux and Android, and the maker says no generative AI was used.

Your village has chosen you for a pilgrimage: you are to ascend to Heaven on its behalf. Near the end of your travels you come to the Great Prophet of the Church, a smiling woman framed by a golden halo, who welcomes you and offers to assist in your ascension. There is a sacred tea ceremony, apologies for the inconvenience, and a room of red drapes and gilt furniture to look around. But the Prophet may not be who she says she is.

It is part visual novel and part point and click: you talk, choose, and pick things in the room, and your choices decide what happens to you and to the future of the church. The cover, a grinning face with bleeding eyes, and players' spoilers suggest where the wrong choices lead.

Players on itch.io rate it 4.7 out of 5 from 86 ratings and single out the voice acting, writing and art; one who does not usually play horror games praises its mood. It suits players who like very short, voiced horror about a cult and a ritual you walked into willingly.

Tips

Look closely at the room; one ending needs an object you might miss, as a player found when a book seemed unselectable.
Play with sound on; the voice acting is what players praise most.
It is short, so play it through in one sitting before reading anything about it.
The Log button lets you reread earlier lines.
