What frightens A New York detective and a painfully shy girl with strange powers answer a dead millionaire's invitation to a remote island mansion. Guests start dying, people talk of a demon of Shironagasu Island, and the island's secret pulls the story from a closed-circle murder mystery into gruesome, B-movie horror where you must stay alive and get off the island.
Content: gore (mentioned by players), sexual exploitation themes and sexualised art of young chara, murder.
Return to Shironagasu Island is a mystery and horror visual novel by the solo Japanese developer ONIMUSHI Hyogo. As detective Sen Ikeda and his shy assistant Neneko, you travel to a secluded island, investigate murders among its guests and try to escape alive as the island's secret comes out.
About Return to Shironagasu Island
Return to Shironagasu Island is a visual novel and mystery adventure written, drawn and made by one Japanese developer, ONIMUSHI Hyogo, and published by TABINOMICHI. It came out on Steam in March 2020, reached Nintendo Switch in November 2022 with voice acting, and later came to iPad.
Sen Ikeda, a detective working in New York, receives an invitation in a millionaire's will to the remote Shironagasu Island. He travels there with Neneko Izumozaki, a girl with special abilities who can barely speak to strangers. At the Higgins mansion they meet the other guests, and soon people begin to die.
You read the story, choose who to question and what to look into, and face a few timed choices where hesitation can cost lives. It opens like a classic closed-island whodunnit, and players compare its start to Umineko, but the island hides something far uglier, and the second half turns gruesome and bizarre. Some scenes are tense and frightening, others lean toward B-movie excess.
Players praise the pace and the pairing of the calm, joking detective and his anxious assistant, and criticise some fan service and the rough edges of a one-person project. A first read takes players around ten to fifteen hours. It suits readers of mystery and horror visual novels who enjoy a story that keeps escalating.
