What frightens A woman hides from her own thoughts in an isolated cabin, the wind keeps her awake, and in the dark the silence begins to take physical form; the story slips between what is real and what is not, told in grainy text-character pictures of masks, hands and windows.

Content: self-harm, hallucinations.

Without a Dawn is a psychological horror visual novel by Jesse Makkonen, the maker of DISTRAINT. A woman escapes to a remote cabin to quiet her thoughts, and in the night the silence around her starts to take physical form. You read and choose your replies over pictures drawn in a pseudo-ASCII style.

About Without a Dawn

Without a Dawn is a horror visual novel by Jesse Makkonen, a solo developer from Finland known for the DISTRAINT games. It came out on Steam in May 2025, and Clickteam brought it to PlayStation, Xbox and Nintendo Switch in April 2026.

The story follows a woman who seeks refuge from her constant, restless thoughts in a cabin far from anyone. There are no distractions there, only the sound of cold wind in the trees that keeps her awake, and in the stillness of the night the silence begins to take physical form. The maker describes it as dark, psychological and philosophical, a story that blurs the line between reality and fiction.

You play by reading. Each moment is a framed picture made of small text characters in dim browns and greens, with a line of narration or a voice beneath it, and now and then a pair of short replies to choose between, such as yes or no, or whether to ignore something. The pictures show her face, a figure in a gas mask, a barred window, two open hands: the dread comes from what these images suggest and from the questions put to her.

The art and sound are handmade, and you can change the colour palette, texture and frame of the picture. The game can also load fan translations, custom palettes and external voice acting.

It suits players who like quiet, introspective horror that reads like a short story, such as DISTRAINT or Pumpkin Eater, more than anyone looking for chases or jump scares. The store notes that it depicts hallucinations and self-harm.

How to play Without a Dawn

  1. Buy and install it from Steam, the PlayStation Store, the Xbox store or the Nintendo eShop.
  2. Start a new game and, if you like, open the options to change the colour palette, texture and frame.
  3. Read each line under the picture and advance the text with a click, a key or the controller.
  4. When two replies appear, choose the one you want her to say or do.
  5. Play in a dark, quiet room with sound on: the wind and the silence carry much of the mood.

Tips

  • Use headphones; much of the atmosphere is in the sound design.
  • Try a few palettes early on until the pictures read clearly on your screen.
  • Take your time over each picture before advancing; details in the art add to the text.
  • Mind the content notes: the store warns of hallucinations and self-harm.
