Games Like Fatal Frame: Ghosts, Cameras and Dread

Fatal Frame makes you face ghosts through a camera lens instead of a gun sight. These games share that camera, its Asian ghost stories or its slow dread, from DreadOut and Heartworm to White Day and Corpse Party.

Fatal Frame, or Project Zero, gives you a camera instead of a gun: you have to look straight at the ghost, frame its face and wait until it is almost on you to take the shot. Few games copy that exactly, but these come close in the camera, the Japanese and Asian ghost stories, or the slow dread of a haunted place.

DreadOut is the nearest: a schoolgirl lost in an abandoned Indonesian town, facing ghosts from local folklore with her phone's flash and an old camera. DreadOut 2 brings those ghosts to her hometown and adds blades. Heartworm is a fixed-camera survival horror game where a grieving girl's only weapon is her grandfather's film camera, in a foggy world of memories. Chilla's Art's Cursed Digicam uses a camera that photographs ghosts to search a park for a lost daughter, and its Onryo gives you an exorcising camera against vengeful spirits in a cursed house. MADiSON hands you an instant camera whose photos show the world beyond, Infliction a camera flash that only stuns the spirit hunting you, and BUNKER 73, pay what you want, sends you into a bunker with a camera and a ghost meter to photograph spirits that only fully appear on film.

If you came for the ghosts more than the camera, White Day locks you in a Korean school at night with patrolling janitors and spirits that burst out of lockers, The Medium walks you through a ruined resort and its spirit world at once, and Corpse Party and Spirit Hunter: Death Mark are Japanese ghost stories told as adventures, with curses that kill. Yomawari: Night Alone is a gentler, smaller night walk among spirits.
