Children of Silentown is a point-and-click adventure by Elf Games, the makers of Little Briar Rose, made with Luna2 Studio and published by Daedalic Entertainment in January 2023 on PC, PlayStation, Xbox and Switch.

Lucy lives in Silentown, a village in the middle of a forest. In daylight the forest is calm. At night the roars of monsters echo through it, and they keep Lucy awake; her dreams are no safer. People in the village disappear, and that is nothing unusual there. This time Lucy decides she is old enough to find out what is going on herself.

You explore the town and its outskirts, talk to its odd inhabitants and the other children, and look for clues. Puzzles are the core of the game: you combine items, sometimes with strange results, and solve set pieces like a sewing board where a red thread has to be guided between buttons. Lucy also learns to sing, and the songs she learns help her when she is in trouble. Minigames with the village children and a cat that likes to get in Lucy's way fill the gaps.

The art is hand-drawn, with children whose eyes are white and empty, black-and-white dream scenes and a forest that turns red and stormy at night. The fear is quiet and creeping rather than sudden: a village where people vanish, and a forest Lucy is warned never to enter. It is a gentle place to start for players who like dark fairy tales and adventure puzzles more than chases.

How to play Children of Silentown

1. Click to walk Lucy around Silentown and talk to the villagers and children.
2. Look closely at each scene and pick up anything that might be useful.
3. Combine items in your inventory, and use them on people and places to get past problems.
4. Learn songs and sing them when a scene calls for one.
5. Follow the clues about the people who disappeared, and stay out of the forest until the story takes you there.

Tips

• Talk to everyone again after something changes; villagers often have something new to say.
• Try combining items even when it seems odd; the game rewards unexpected combinations.
• Keep the songs Lucy learns in mind; when you are stuck, one of them may be the answer.
• Play the minigames with the other children; they are part of village life and part of the story.
