What frightens The Rabbit goes deeper into a Wonderland drawn as a grimy, half-real city of gangsters, where familiar characters have turned seedy and dangerous, a bloodied playing card sits in a grinning man's hat band, and one peek through a wall is meant to send a shiver down your spine.

Content: blood, rated mature on newgrounds.

The second episode of the free Alice is Dead trilogy on Newgrounds. Still not sure who he is or what happened to Alice, the Rabbit heads into a seedy, gangster-ridden Wonderland, talks his way past voiced characters such as the Mad Hatter and solves harder inventory puzzles to follow the trail.

About Alice is Dead - Ep 2

Alice is Dead - Ep 2 continues the free Flash point-and-click series by Mike Morin (ImpendingRiot) and Hyptosis. It came out on Newgrounds in January 2010, sponsored by the site, four months after the first episode. The makers ask you to play Episode 1 first, and it picks up right after that one's cliffhanger.

The Rabbit is still looking for answers about himself and about Alice, and this time Wonderland looks more like a dirty, half-real city run by gangsters. Hyptosis wrote that he wanted to splice that semi-real world with Wonderland's insanity to make it easier to relate to and more unnerving to explore. Familiar figures come back in sleazy new forms, the Mad Hatter among them.

It plays like the first episode but asks more. You still collect and combine items, but there are more characters to talk to and dialogue choices, the cursor gives no hint of what can be clicked, and the puzzles depend on reading the scenes closely. It now has full voice acting, by TomaMoto, and music by Andie Ciambotti, and it has Newgrounds medals to unlock.

Reviewers found it less creepy than Episode 1 and more of a crime story, but still unsettling. Jay is Games called the look an early draft from Tim Burton as edited by Quentin Tarantino, praised the creepy music and warned that one look through a wall may give you shivers. Newgrounds rates it Mature.

It takes under half an hour and ends on another cliffhanger. It suits players who finished Episode 1 and want the story to go on, and who like dark, darkly funny point-and-click mysteries.

How to play Alice is Dead - Ep 2

  1. Play Episode 1 first; this one starts where it ends.
  2. Open the game's Newgrounds page in a desktop browser and press play; the Flash game runs in Newgrounds' Ruffle player.
  3. Press Play on the title screen (log in to Newgrounds first if you want the medals saved).
  4. Click around each scene for items and people; the cursor does not change over things you can use, so click widely.
  5. Talk to the characters, combine items and use them on the scenes to move the story on.

Tips

  • Listen to what the characters tell you; puzzle answers are often in the dialogue.
  • Because the cursor never changes, click every part of a scene before deciding you are stuck.
  • Wait until the very end of the credits.
  • If Ruffle runs slowly, enable hardware acceleration in your browser.
