What frightens You wake as a prisoner in a filthy cell while a beast tears through the prison; scorched flesh drops into your cell, guards lie mutilated in the halls, terrified inmates rave behind bars, and you have to use whatever you find, a dead man's hand included, to get out before the thing finds you.

Content: gore, blood, violence.

Arrival in Hell is a free Flash point-and-click horror game by skideh and cicla, released on Newgrounds in 2006. You are a prisoner who wakes in a cell as something monstrous loose in the prison kills guards and inmates, and you must use what you find, often grimly, to escape.

About Arrival in Hell

Arrival in Hell is a point-and-click horror escape game made in Flash by Richard Rout (skideh), who wrote the code, and Eduardo Mojica (cicla), who drew it. It came out on Newgrounds in November 2006, sponsored by Rusty Games, and won Daily First and a place on the front page. Newgrounds rates it M. In 2010 the makers put up a revamp with touched-up graphics and fixed glitches to mark the release of Arrival in Hell 2; both versions still play in the browser on Newgrounds.

You play a bald inmate in an orange jumpsuit who wakes in a squalid cell, with a stained toilet, a sink and a bunk, while a beast runs loose through the building. The makers describe it as a dark Monkey Island style puzzle game. You walk your prisoner between a handful of rooms, look at things, pick them up, combine them and use them on the world, and talk to the guards and prisoners you meet.

The horror is in what is left behind. Burnt flesh lands in your cell, the corridors hold mutilated guards, one inmate has lost his mind in fear and a guard shakes too hard to make sense, and the puzzles push you to use the dead to get through. The art is thick-lined cartoon drawing, but there is plenty of blood and gore.

It is a small game from the Flash era with a single ending, and it suits players who like classic escape and adventure puzzles with a darker, bloodier setting. Arrival in Hell 2 continues the story with a longer escape and three endings.

How to play Arrival in Hell

  1. Open the game's Newgrounds page; the old Flash game runs in the browser through Newgrounds' Ruffle player, so no plug-in is needed.
  2. Press the play button on the game, wait for it to load and choose Play Game; pick a lower quality if it runs slowly.
  3. Click to walk your prisoner around, look at things and pick up what you can.
  4. Combine items in your inventory and use them on doors, scanners and people to open the way.
  5. Talk to the guards and prisoners, and choose your words; what they tell you or give you is part of the escape.

Tips

  • Search your cell well before leaving; the first items you find matter later.
  • Try combining items with each other, not only using them on the world.
  • Go back to rooms you have already visited once you have something new to try.
  • If you get stuck, the makers pointed players to a walkthrough on the sponsor's site, and guides are on GameFAQs.
