What frightens A point-and-click survival horror game its maker says is inspired by Silent Hill, Resident Evil and Exmortis, meant to be played with the lights off and the volume up: dark rooms, crying and laughing babies on the soundtrack, and a clown-like figure and monsters that appear as you move between rooms.

Content: jumpscares, creepy sounds.

Inculcation is a free point-and-click horror game by Ransom, played in the browser on Newgrounds. You search dark, run-down rooms for items and solve their puzzles while a clown-like figure and other things show up where you do not expect them.

About Inculcation

Inculcation is a Flash game by Ransom, released on Newgrounds for Halloween 2009, where it was front-paged and took Daily 4th Place. It still plays there in the browser through Newgrounds' Flash player. Its maker describes it in one line: a point-and-click survival horror inspired by Silent Hill, Resident Evil and Exmortis. Its loading screen asks you to play with the lights off and the volume up.

You see each place in still first-person scenes, dim kitchens and corridors drawn in grey, and click to look around, pick things up and move on. Players describe a house, a block of flats and more places beyond them, puzzles built from what you find, a lock you pick by steering the cursor around obstacles, and doors and boxes opened with coloured handles and codes.

The fear comes in sudden appearances and in sound. Reviewers remember a clown-like figure in a corridor, monsters behind doors, a strange shape at a window and the sound of babies crying and laughing. Several say they started to hesitate before opening each door. The story ends on a twist that many reviews mention; it is best met without reading about it.

At the end the game grades you from F to S, and medals reward the higher ranks, so it is worth a second, faster run. It suits players who like the old first-person adventure games with a horror story, and who want something free in a browser tab.

How to play Inculcation

  1. Open the game's Newgrounds page and press play on the game.
  2. Press Play on the title screen and close the notice about medals if you are not logged in.
  3. Click on the scene to look at things, pick up items and move from room to room.
  4. Use what you find on the right objects to solve each place's puzzles and go further.
  5. Reach the end to get your rank, from F up to S, then play again for a better one.

Tips

  • Play at night with headphones, as the game itself asks: much of the fear is in the sound.
  • If you are stuck, players say the Tab key made it much easier.
  • Your first run will be slow; a second run when you know the puzzles is the way to an S rank.
  • Click drawers and furniture more than once; players found secrets that way.
