What frightens Alma, the ghostly mother of the series, is pregnant, and her psychic contractions tear reality open: the Almaverse spills sinister creatures born in her mind into the streets, and blood-soaked apparitions of Alma and of the dead brother Fettel appear between the firefights.

Content: gore, violence, strong language, disturbing imagery.

F.E.A.R. 3 is the third F.E.A.R. game, a first-person shooter made by Day 1 Studios and released in 2011. Point Man and the spirit of his dead brother Paxton Fettel fight soldiers and paranormal creatures through a world warped by their pregnant mother Alma, alone or in a two-player co-op campaign.

About F.E.A.R. 3

F.E.A.R. 3 was developed by Day 1 Studios and published by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment in 2011, following the original F.E.A.R. and F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin. Film director John Carpenter helped craft its cinematics and comic writer Steve Niles co-wrote the story, which turns to the family at the centre of the series.

Alma is expecting, and a new level of terror grows with her. You play Point Man, a genetically enhanced soldier with superhuman reflexes who can slow time, or the undead spirit of his brother Paxton Fettel, a paranormal spirit with psychic powers. The two have to fight their way together toward their twisted mother.

Most of the game is combat: cover you can use from any angle, slow-motion modes, a scoring system and mech sections against soldiers and the creatures that Alma's mind lets loose. The world is tainted by the Almaverse, the alternate dimension where her psychic essence lives, so streets and buildings fill with blood, apparitions and things that should not be there. A generative system adds random events so a level can play out differently each time.

It suits players who want a shooter wrapped in a ghost story, especially with a friend for the co-op campaign, more than players who want a slow, defenceless horror game.

How to play F.E.A.R. 3

  1. Start the campaign alone as Point Man, or with a friend, one playing Point Man and the other Fettel.
  2. As Point Man, take cover, shoot and use slow motion to win firefights.
  3. As Fettel, use psychic powers instead of guns against the soldiers and creatures.
  4. Push through each level toward Alma, earning points for how you fight.
  5. Try the multiplayer modes with up to four players once the campaign is done.

Tips

  • Save slow motion for rooms with several enemies.
  • In co-op, talk about who takes which enemies; the brothers' abilities differ and work best together.
  • Use cover all the time; enemies flank quickly.
  • Play with the lights low and sound up; the apparitions work best when you are not expecting them.
