What frightens A wolf kills a little girl near Munich, and Gabriel Knight, now heir to a line of shadow hunters, is asked to deal with what the villagers call a werewolf; the trail leads through hunting lodges, zoo kennels and dungeons to a secret reaching back to King Ludwig II, in filmed full-motion video.

Content: violence, death of a child (off screen).

Gabriel Knight 2: The Beast Within is Sierra's 1995 full-motion-video horror adventure, written by Jane Jensen. Gabriel Knight, now a hereditary shadow hunter, investigates a little girl's killing by a wolf in Bavaria, while his assistant Grace follows the case into the history of King Ludwig II.

About Gabriel Knight 2: The Beast Within

The Beast Within is the second Gabriel Knight game, written by Jane Jensen and released by Sierra On-Line in 1995. Unlike the first game's drawn art, it is filmed: real actors move through photographed locations in Germany, and every action leads to a video sequence. It is sold on GOG and on Steam, where it is called The Beast Within: A Gabriel Knight Mystery.

Gabriel, a New Orleans bookseller and writer, has learned he is the last of the Schattenjägers, a family of shadow hunters. In Bavaria he is asked by villagers to look into the death of a little girl killed by a wolf. He suspects the killing is paranormal. His assistant Grace Nakimura, meanwhile, follows a parallel trail into the life and death of King Ludwig II and a lost Wagner opera.

You play as Gabriel and as Grace in turn, in chapters of classic point-and-click detective work: talking to suspects, examining scenes, solving puzzles and following clues across Munich, hunting lodges and castles. Players today praise its story and soundtrack and smile at its 1990s acting.

It suits players who like FMV adventures, werewolf stories and story-led occult mysteries; play Sins of the Fathers first if you can.
