What frightens A group chant at a remote island retreat opens the Gloom, a psychedelic dimension that feeds on negative energy; as the other guests are consumed by their own darkness, you craft spiritual weapons, fight or flee prismatic creatures and cultists, and keep your mind from panic.

Content: gore, violence, drug use, trauma.

The Chant is a third-person horror action-adventure game by Brass Token, published by Prime Matter. A weekend at a remote island spiritual retreat turns to dread when a group chant opens the Gloom, and you must craft, fight and flee its creatures while uncovering the legacy of a 1970s cult.

About The Chant

The Chant is a single-player, third-person horror action-adventure game by Brass Token, published by Prime Matter and released in November 2022 for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.

You play Jess, one of a group on a peaceful weekend at a spiritual retreat on a remote island. A group chant goes wrong and opens the Gloom, a psychedelic dimension of terror that feeds off negative energy. The other members of the retreat slowly become consumed by their own darkness, and prismatic creatures and cultists come out of the Gloom.

To survive you collect, craft and manage resources, and take your chances in close combat with spiritual weapons and abilities, or flee when it is too much. The game asks for balance: steel your mind against horror and panic, protect your body against physical threats, and raise your spirit to meditate and reach supernatural abilities.

Along the way you reason with the survivors, piece together the weird history of the island and the legacy of a cult from the 1970s, and face revelations about the cosmos. Its look draws on 1970s psychedelic horror, with coloured lighting and an electronic rock soundtrack by Paul Ruskay.

It suits players who like third-person survival horror with cults, cosmic dread and an isolated island setting.

How to play The Chant

  1. Buy it on Steam or GOG for Windows, or on the PlayStation Store or Xbox store for PS5 or Xbox Series X|S.
  2. Explore the island retreat as Jess and talk to the other members.
  3. Collect and craft spiritual weapons and supplies.
  4. Fight the creatures of the Gloom or flee them, keeping mind, body and spirit in balance.
  5. Uncover the history of the island's 1970s cult to find how to reverse the ritual.
