What frightens A father washes up on a grey island searching for his lost daughter and finds wrecks, a dead man by candlelight, rune-carved monoliths in the surf and, rising from the sea, the vast tentacled entities of Lovecraft's mythos.

Content: disturbing imagery, jumpscares.

The Shore is a short first-person Lovecraftian horror game. As Andrew, a father looking for his lost daughter, you explore a forbidden island and the strange dimensions beyond it, solve puzzles and face some of the best-known entities of the Cthulhu mythos.

About The Shore

The Shore is the work of Ares Dragonis, a Greek developer who made most of it alone: story, models, animation, levels and audio. It came out on PC in February 2021 and on PlayStation 5 as an Enhanced Edition in April 2026, with an Xbox Series X|S version announced.

Andrew is searching for his missing daughter, and the search brings him to the shore of an island that should not be there. There are wrecked boats on the black sand, an abandoned lighthouse, and signs of people who came before and did not leave. The island is only the tip of something much larger.

You walk, look and solve puzzles in a striking, misty world of grey stone and pale sea, while the story unfolds through narration. As you go deeper you pass into stranger dimensions and come face to face with entities from Lovecraft's mythos, giant and incomprehensible. Along the way you master the artifacts of the old gods and use them in a few combat sequences.

Reviewers praised its visuals, atmosphere and music and were mixed on its gameplay, with invisible walls and stiff combat drawing complaints. It is short, around two hours. It suits Lovecraft fans who want to see the mythos on a grand scale in one evening.

How to play The Shore

  1. Explore the island in first person, following Andrew's narration and the paths along the shore.
  2. Look for notes and objects that tell the story of those who came before.
  3. Solve the puzzles that open the way deeper into the island and beyond.
  4. Use the artifacts of the old gods when the entities come for you.

Tips

  • Play it in one evening; it is short and built for one sitting.
  • If a path seems blocked, look for another; the edges of the island are fenced by invisible walls.
  • Read what you find; the background story is spread through notes and scenes.
  • Turn the sound up; the music and the sea do much of the work.
