It gets so lonely here was written and programmed by ebi-hime, with character art by Mossinasi, and released free on Steam in May 2023 after first appearing on itch.io for the Yandere Game Jam 2023. It is free on both stores, and the maker has also released a free sequel, The end of an obsession.

It opens with you running through a forest late at night, with no map, no route and no plan, only the need to escape. Something is after you, and it says your efforts are already in vain. At a crossroads you choose a path, to the shore, the village or the castle, and each leads to a different girl from a fairy tale.

The horror is quiet and creeping rather than graphic. The maker states there is no explicit blood or gore, but warns that the story touches on drowning, being buried alive, cannibalism and bullying. Romance and threat are hard to tell apart, and an archly amused narrator comments on your poor decisions as you go.

It suits readers who like yandere stories, dark fairy tales and visual novels where love itself is the danger. Players who want to see the whole story should finish the routes and start again, as later playthroughs change.
