What frightens The dead walk in huge numbers and every person they kill gets back up. You and up to seven others scrape through dark streets, malls and rooftops with almost no ammunition, no crosshair and melee weapons that get covered in blood, while slow walkers close in and faster runners charge. One bite can infect you, and you can hide it from your team or ask them to deal with you before you turn.

Content: gore, violence, suicide (an option to avoid turning).

A free co-op zombie survival game for up to eight players, built on the Source engine as a tribute to George Romero's Dead films. Ammunition is scarce, there is no crosshair, and one bite can infect you, so a team has to stick together to reach extraction.

About No More Room in Hell

No More Room in Hell started as a Half-Life 2 mod, founded in 2003 and taken over by a new team in 2009, and was named PC Gamer's Mod of the Year in 2011. The standalone game came to Steam on 31 October 2013, free, from the No More Room in Hell Team, published by Lever Games, for Windows and Linux. Its title comes from the line in Romero's Dawn of the Dead: when there is no more room in hell, the dead will walk the earth.

It is first-person, realistic and slow. There are no crosshairs and only a minimal HUD that appears when you ask for it. Ammunition and weapons are extremely scarce, so you aim down the sights for the head, and much of the time you fight with what you find: a fire axe, a shovel, your fists, all the way up to a chainsaw. Sprinting is short and stamina runs out. Walkers shamble in crowds, runners charge, and you are never far from being surrounded.

The heart of it is teamwork. Up to eight players work through objective maps, which can change from one playthrough to the next, or hold a shelter in Survival mode until extraction comes. Voice and text chat are limited by distance, so a player who wanders off can stop hearing the others. And then there is infection: a bite may doom you, and you choose whether to tell your team or keep quiet and hope for a cure.

Reviewers compare it to Left 4 Dead crossed with Project Zomboid. It asks for patience and plays best with friends, and a recent update made it easier to play together. It suits players who want co-op zombie horror that is harsh and lonely rather than fast and arcade-like.

Tips

  • Aim for the head: body shots waste the little ammunition you have.
  • Melee weapons are your main tools; watch your stamina before swinging.
  • If you are bitten, tell your team: hiding it can get everyone killed.
  • Do not sprint into the open; runners and crowds catch lone players.
