What frightens Alone at a dark desk you turn an ancient clay figure in your hands, magnify its marks and look things up in your books, and as you learn more the artefact begins to change: a metal shard inside it, a dark liquid seeping from its holes. Dread builds slowly from what you uncover rather than from jump scares.

Content: disturbing imagery, a few jumpscares.

The Children of Clay is a short, free point-and-click horror game made in stop motion. As an archaeologist you examine an ancient clay artefact, turning it, magnifying it and researching its marks in your books, and uncover a dark secret drawn from Hungarian mythology.

About The Children of Clay

The Children of Clay is a free game by Balazs Ronyai, released on Steam in March 2025. It is animated in stop motion, which gives the clay figure at its centre a real, handled weight, and its story draws on Hungarian mythology.

The whole game happens at one desk in the dark. You pick up the artefact and turn it in every direction, look at its surface through a magnifying glass, and search your reference books by keyword to understand what you see. Each find unlocks the next question, so the game works as a quiet investigation puzzle.

The horror is in what the investigation reveals. Small, wrong details appear: something metal embedded in the clay, a dark liquid that was not there before. The candlelight, the scratchy film look and the slow, careful pace let the dread grow without leaning on jump scares, and players speak most of its atmosphere and its ending.

It takes about half an hour, costs nothing and suits anyone who likes slow, eerie mysteries, archaeology and handmade looks.
