Games Like Layers of Fear: Psychological Horror Walks
Layers of Fear is a walk through a painter's mansion that rebuilds itself as he loses his mind. These games share that first-person psychological horror of places that shift and remember, from Bloober Team's own Observer and The Medium to haunted houses like Visage and MADiSON.

Layers of Fear is first-person psychological horror in which the place itself is the monster: a painter's mansion rebuilds itself behind your back, doors open onto rooms that were not there, and the story of his family comes out of the walls as he loses his grip. Bloober Team's 2023 version gathers the first two games and new chapters into one. The games below share that idea of a walk through a space that changes with a mind, and many come from the same studio.
Start with Bloober Team's other games. Layers of Fear 2, on its own, puts an actor aboard an ocean liner whose corridors and film sets shift with his memories. Observer: System Redux is the cyberpunk version: a police detective in 2084 who hacks into suspects' minds, where their memories become shifting nightmares. The Medium has a medium explore an abandoned resort in two realities at once, and Blair Witch takes a former police officer and his dog into woods that twist time and memory. Bloober Team's remake of SILENT HILL 2 brings the same idea to a fog-bound town that bends around one man's guilt, with more fighting and puzzles than Layers of Fear, and Layers of Fear VR, made by Incuvo, puts you in the painter's mansion with your own hands on its drawers and doors.
For the haunted house without Bloober's name, Visage is the big one: a large house where families died, no weapons, and only light to protect your sanity as their stories replay around you. MADiSON is louder and more puzzle-driven, with an instant camera whose photos reach into the beyond, and Infliction has you piece together a family's tragedy room by room while an angry spirit hunts you. ANATOMY is the short, quiet one: a dark house at night and tapes that describe it as if it were a body.
For a mind coming apart outside a house, The Park sends a mother through a closing amusement park at sunset to find her son, The Town of Light walks a rebuilt real asylum in Tuscany through the confused memories of a girl committed there in 1938, and The Suicide of Rachel Foster traps a woman in her father's snowed-in hotel with his guilt, with almost no threat at all beyond the voice on the radio and what the rooms remember.
If you only try one, play Visage for the most frightening house, or Observer: System Redux for the most inventive of Bloober Team's other games.
Questions
What other games did the makers of Layers of Fear make?
Bloober Team also made Observer, Blair Witch, The Medium, the Silent Hill 2 remake and Cronos: The New Dawn.
Which game like Layers of Fear is the most frightening?
Visage leans hardest on fear: a house where families died, with no weapons and a sanity that drains in the dark. MADiSON is the loudest, with more jump scares.
Are there games like Layers of Fear with no monsters to fight?
Almost all of these have no combat. The Suicide of Rachel Foster and ANATOMY have hardly any threat at all; the fear is in the place and the story.
