What frightens James returns to the fog-choked town of Silent Hill after a letter from his dead wife. The streets and buildings are near empty, broken and rusted, and the things that move in the fog read as pieces of his own guilt. You see only a few feet ahead, a radio hisses when a monster is near, and supplies are thin enough that each encounter is a question of whether to fight or slip past.
Content: gore, disturbing imagery, sexual themes, self-harm, loud sounds.
A ground-up remake of the 2001 survival horror. James Sunderland searches a fog-bound Silent Hill for his late wife, fighting and fleeing monsters that mirror his guilt while solving puzzles and rationing scarce supplies. The fear is psychological: dread, shame and a town that bends to the people inside it.
About SILENT HILL 2
SILENT HILL 2 is a remake of Konami's 2001 survival horror, rebuilt by Bloober Team and published by Konami in 2024. It follows James Sunderland, who drives to the lakeside town of Silent Hill after receiving a letter from his wife, who has been dead for three years. The town is wrapped in thick fog and later in rust and darkness, and James works through its streets, an apartment block, a hospital and other places as he looks for her.
You play over the shoulder in third person. A pocket radio spits static when a creature is close, which is often your first warning in the fog. Combat uses a wooden plank, a pistol and a few other weapons, but ammunition and healing items are limited, so you weigh each fight against simply avoiding it. Between threats you search rooms for keys and notes, and you solve puzzles that gate your progress, with a separate difficulty setting for the puzzles.
The horror is built on mood and meaning rather than constant action. The monsters, including the hooded Lying Figures and the executioner Pyramid Head, are tied to James and to the town's history, and the story circles grief, guilt and self-punishment. Several endings exist, decided by how you play and what you do along the way.
The remake keeps the shape of the original while widening the camera, expanding the town and rebuilding the look and sound for modern hardware. Akira Yamaoka returned for the music. It suits players who want slow, oppressive dread and a story-driven descent rather than fast scares, and it works both as a first Silent Hill and as a return for people who played the original.
How to play SILENT HILL 2
- Buy SILENT HILL 2 on Steam for PC or on the PlayStation Store for PS5, then install it.
- Start a new game and pick your combat and puzzle difficulty separately; lower combat difficulty eases the fights without changing the story.
- Walk the fog-bound town as James, listening to the radio static that warns when a monster is near.
- Search rooms for ammunition, health drinks, keys and notes, and manage your limited inventory.
- Solve the locked-door and item puzzles to open the apartments, hospital and the rest of the town.
- Decide fight or flight for each creature, since supplies rarely cover every encounter.

Tips
- Let the radio guide you: when it hisses, something is close even if the fog hides it.
- Carry the flashlight on in dark interiors but be aware it also makes you easier to find.
- Save ammunition for the harder enemies and use the plank on the weaker ones.
- Read every note and examine rooms fully; puzzle answers and spare supplies are easy to miss in the gloom.
- If the fights frustrate you, set combat difficulty lower and keep the puzzle difficulty where you want the challenge.
