Forgotten Hill The Third Axis is a point-and-click horror game by FM Studio, released free on Steam for Windows and Mac in October 2023, and also free on the App Store and Google Play, where it has ads and in-app purchases. After years of drawn scenes, it is the first Forgotten Hill game in 3D, which gives the name its double meaning.

You are a member of the Third Axis, an organisation that sends you on a dangerous mission: find the truth behind the disappearance of one of its important members. The search leads into an old house in the town, with portraits on striped wallpaper, a library, a kitchen, a red-brick bedroom with a rocking horse and a cracked mirror, and a room with a cage. Blood soaks the rugs, an axe lies in a pool of it, and grotesque creatures lurk in the corners.

It still plays like the rest of the series. You look around each room in first person, pick up and examine items, read clues and solve puzzles, with the inventory along the bottom of the screen. Players say the puzzles run from easy to tricky, and some found the 3D view makes clues harder to spot than in the drawn games, while others liked the new look. Series fans will also find links to earlier games hidden in the house.

It suits players who want to try Forgotten Hill for free before buying the other games, or who like puzzle-box horror in the Rusty Lake style with a grimmer, bloodier edge.
