Content: violence, blood and gore, sexual themes, suicide, disturbing adult themes.

I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream is a 1995 point-and-click horror adventure based on Harlan Ellison's short story. You play five humans kept alive inside the master computer AM, each put through a scenario drawn from their darkest fears, with Ellison himself as the voice of AM.

About I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream

I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream is a point-and-click adventure made by The Dreamers Guild and first released in 1995. It is based on Harlan Ellison's short story of the same name, and Ellison voices AM, the insane master computer at its centre. Nightdive Studios publishes it today on Steam and GOG, and console versions ported by QUByte Interactive came out for PlayStation, Xbox and Switch in 2025.

The setup comes straight from the story. Five people have been buried in the bowels of AM for 109 years: Gorrister the suicidal loner, Benny the mutilated brute, Ellen the hysterical phobic, Nimdok the secretive sadist and Ted the cynical paranoid. You take each of them, one at a time, through a scenario AM has built for them in its own setting, and each one digs into their hidden past.

Play is the classic adventure kind: you pick a verb such as Walk to, Look at, Talk to, Take, Use, Give or Swallow, click it on the scene, and use the items in your inventory. The store promises challenging dilemmas with strongly charged emotional issues, and the horror lies there, in what the characters have done and what AM makes of it, more than in anything jumping out at you.

It is a game for players who like slow, literary horror and do not mind old interfaces. It deals openly with violence, cruelty and adult themes, as the store warns.

Tips

  • Read the descriptions when you Look at things; the game tells each character's past through them.
