What frightens You are wetware in a 1990s office building, climbing floor by floor on the orders of a pager that never explains itself. Empty desks, a room of staring eyes, torii gates in the dark: the floors grow stranger and more unsettling, with some horror and some humour in black-and-white 1-bit 3D.

PAGER is a 1-bit, first-person Kafkaesque horror game by bilge, set in a 90s office building where you obey a pager to survive and climb. Its 60 floors grow stranger and more unsettling, mixing some horror with some humour. A free ten-floor demo plays in the browser on itch.io; the full game is on Steam.

About PAGER

PAGER is by the solo developer bilge, made in Construct with 3D models from Blockbench. A prototype and then a browser demo came first, in 2024; the full game, with 60 floors, was released in October 2025 on Steam, and buying it on itch.io comes with a Steam key.

You are wetware, working a mysterious job. The building is a 1990s office rendered in stark, dithered black and white, and your only instructions come from a pager. Obey it to survive and to climb the corporate ladder, one floor at a time. The maker lists Severance, Franz Kafka, David Lynch, The Prisoner, The Stanley Parable, Sonny Boy and Serial Experiments Lain among its inspirations.

The floors are the game. Some are plain offices of empty desks and fluorescent panels; others are a room of staring eyes, a checkered floor, or a path of torii gates in the dark. The story is told indirectly, the levels are not about the destination, and the maker warns it should not give you any satisfaction. The fear is the quiet, absurd kind: obedience, isolation and a building that keeps going, with some humour and caffeine-addicted butterflies along the way.

The free web demo has ten floors; the full game has 60. It suits players who liked the corporate dread of HR: Human Remains or the uncanny loops of The Exit 8 and want something stranger.

How to play PAGER

  1. Play the free ten-floor demo in the browser on itch.io, or buy the full game on Steam or itch.io.
  2. Look and move in first person through each office floor.
  3. Read the pager's messages and do what it tells you.
  4. Find the way up to the next floor, and keep climbing.

Tips

  • If the mouse cursor does not lock in Chrome, players report the browser demo works in Firefox.
  • Read every pager message: the story is told indirectly, through small details.
  • Do not rush: the maker says the floors are not about the destination.
