About Paper Lily - Chapter 1

Paper Lily - Chapter 1 is the first full chapter of Paper Lily, made by Leef 6010 in RPG Maker. It came out free on itch.io in January 2023 and on Steam in January 2024. It follows the prologue Project Kat, but the maker says it can be played without it.

You play Lacie. Something terrible has happened, and since then she has stopped going to school and stopped leaving her house. A golden letter offers one last try at getting her life back, and it leads her into a hidden world of woods, lakeside houses and strange buildings, where she meets odd characters and looks for answers about her unusual condition.

The game looks soft and cute, with bright pixel maps and anime portraits, and that is what makes its turns hit. Paper creatures and bunnies share the world with demons that chase her, rooms are smeared with blood, and careless choices can kill her. The puzzles are the heart of it: each has several solutions, and the way you solve them changes what happens later and which of the endings you reach.

It suits players who like story-heavy RPG Maker horror such as Ib or The Witch's House and want something longer and more branching. A first run takes about four hours, and many players go back for the other endings.

How to play Paper Lily - Chapter 1

1. Walk Lacie around the top-down maps with the arrow keys or a controller and press the action key to look at things and talk.
2. Pick up items and use them on the world to open new paths.
3. Try more than one answer to each puzzle; each route can change what happens later.
4. Save at the save points before anything that looks dangerous.
5. Replay after the end to look for the other endings.

Tips

• Look at everything twice: curiosity is often rewarded, and sometimes punished.
• Save often; some choices and chases end in a quick death.
• If a puzzle seems stuck, think about another way through rather than the obvious one.
• Play Project Kat first if you want the whole story, though it is not needed.
