What frightens Two of the series' defining games in HD: in Silent Hill 2 James Sunderland follows a letter from his dead wife into the fog-bound town and the monsters it makes of his guilt; in Silent Hill 3 teenager Heather Mason is dragged from a shopping mall into a rusting, blood-soaked otherworld where something wants her.

Content: violence, gore, disturbing imagery, self-harm themes.

Silent Hill: HD Collection brings Silent Hill 2 (2001) and Silent Hill 3 (2003) to the Xbox 360 in high definition, and Konami still sells it on the Xbox store, where it plays on Xbox One and Series X|S. It is the one way to buy the original versions of both games digitally today.

About Silent Hill: HD Collection

Silent Hill: HD Collection was released by Konami in 2012. It brings two of the series' most important games to high definition: Silent Hill 2, first released in 2001, and Silent Hill 3, from 2003. The store calls it the early era of Silent Hill, a genre-defining experience, and it remains on sale on the Xbox store, playable on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S.

In Silent Hill 2, James Sunderland receives a letter from his wife, who died three years earlier, asking him to meet her in Silent Hill. The town he finds is wrapped in fog and full of monsters that seem made from his own guilt. Silent Hill 3 follows Heather Mason, an ordinary teenager pulled from a shopping mall into a rusting, bloody otherworld, and ties back to the first game.

Both play as classic survival horror: you explore the town and its buildings, fight or run from monsters with scarce ammunition, listen to your radio crackle when they come near, and solve puzzles. Silent Hill 2 can be played with its original or its new voice acting.

The HD versions were criticised when they came out for technical problems and for thinning the original fog. Even so, for players who want the original games rather than the 2024 remake of Silent Hill 2, this collection is the way to buy them.

How to play Silent Hill: HD Collection

  1. Buy it on the Xbox store; it plays on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S.
  2. Choose Silent Hill 2 or Silent Hill 3 from the collection.
  3. Explore the town with your map, flashlight and radio, collecting items and solving puzzles.
  4. Fight only when you must: ammunition is scarce, and running is often better.

Tips

  • Turn the radio up: its static warns you a monster is close.
  • Check your map often; it marks locked doors and clues.
  • Play Silent Hill 2 first if you are new; Silent Hill 3 follows the first game's story.
