What frightens Rotting soldiers of an undead army pour out of canals, catacombs and a zombie zoo, joined by hulking armoured elites, shadow demons and suicide bombers, with slow-motion X-ray kills showing every bullet tear through bone.

Content: gore, violence, jumpscares.

A co-op shooter by Rebellion, the makers of Sniper Elite, set in an alternate 1946 Europe where the Nazi dead have risen again. Up to four players fight hordes of occult zombies across Italy and beyond with the series' sniping and X-ray kill cams. It is gory, loud and played for pulp thrills more than dread.

About Zombie Army 4: Dead War

Zombie Army 4: Dead War was released by the British studio Rebellion on 4 February 2020 for PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, and came to Nintendo Switch in April 2022. It continues the alternate history of the Zombie Army Trilogy, which grew out of Rebellion's Sniper Elite series, and later seasons of campaign chapters were added after launch.

After the defeat of Zombie Hitler, the dead rise again, and the Survivor Brigade travels across Italy and further to stop a new occult plot. Levels are long runs through flooded canals, catacombs, a zoo and ruined Italian cities, broken up by stands where you hold a position against wave after wave. You collect weapons and upgrade them at workbenches with fire, lightning and holy power, and rank up perks and outfits over time.

Its horror is a B-movie kind: grinning skeletal soldiers with glowing eyes, buzzsaw-armed brutes, demons that move through shadow and the dead bursting out of the dark around you. The X-ray kill camera follows bullets through bone in slow motion. It is more gruesome than frightening, and it never asks you to hide.

It suits friends who want a co-op shooter with zombies and a sense of humour, and fans of Sniper Elite's long-range shooting.

Tips

  • Use headshots from range: the sniper rifle is the series' strongest tool.
  • Take out armoured elites and suicide bombers first when they appear in a crowd.
  • Keep a heavy or explosive weapon ready for big enemies like the zombie tank.
  • Stick with the team; downed players need someone close to revive them.
