Jump scares are the easiest kind of fright, and plenty of players would rather do without them. The games here frighten in other ways: dread that builds, places that are wrong, choices that cost you. Each is described by its makers, its store page or its players as having no jump scares, or very few; where it is only few, we say so.

Darkwood is the strongest pick if you still want real danger. Its makers describe it as slow-burn horror without jumpscares, and the fear comes from sound, a narrow field of view and the long nights in your hideout. Pathologic Classic HD is horror as despair: a plague town, twelve days and not enough medicine. Clea is a 2D game of sneaking past monsters that hear every step, built as a test of skill rather than of nerves.

For stories, Scarlet Hollow is a branching visual novel with no jumpscares, Firework is a Chinese investigation into a village massacre whose makers kept ghosts almost unseen, and Matsuro Palette has you paint a cursed girl's portrait over seven days, with the store promising no jump scares at all. Static Dread: The Lighthouse puts you in charge of ships passing a Lovecraftian coast, and CARIMARA is a short ghost mystery players call eerie rather than frightening.

For places that are simply wrong, POOLS has no monsters at all, only endless tiled pool halls, and Anemoiapolis is a shifting underground town of empty malls that reviewers note never attacks you. Underground Blossom is a Rusty Lake puzzle game, and A Wolf in Autumn is a short surreal forest from the maker of Iron Lung.

Two free browser games show how far you can go with text alone: Please Answer Carefully, a five-minute questionnaire, and Be Honest, a personality quiz that turns. No one lives under the lighthouse, The Excavation of Hob's Barrow and The Vanishing of Ethan Carter each have a few jump scares, but they are slow, quiet games where atmosphere does the work.

Start with Darkwood if you want tension, or POOLS if you want none of the monsters either.
