What frightens The maker sets it at bedtime: all you have to do is go to bed in a dim, low-poly house at night, and the question is whether you can get through each situation the night puts in your way, in a game the maker tags creepy, atmospheric and psychological horror.

Go To Bed is a free, short first-person horror game by JoeTheItchPro, made in two weeks for the DreadXP End of Summer Bone Jam. You only have to get to bed in a dim low-poly house, one situation at a time, and each one is less ordinary than the last. It runs on Windows, Mac and Linux.

About Go To Bed

Go To Bed was made by JoeTheItchPro in two weeks for the DreadXP End of Summer Bone Jam in September 2023, and it is free, name your own price, on itch.io. After the jam the maker released an updated version with adjusted volume and light levels, extra text to clear up confusion, and fixes to collision and player physics, keeping the game true to its jam size.

The idea fits in one line from the maker: a short horror game about going to bed. Can you successfully pass each situation? You walk through plain rooms in first person, a bed, a lamp on a night stand, bin bags in a corner, and do the small things that come before sleep.

It is drawn in low-poly 3D with flat, pixelated textures and a blocky pixel font, the look of a late-1990s console game. The lighting is dim, often a single lamp in a dark room, which the maker tuned after the jam.

The horror is in what the routine turns into, and the maker keeps it off the page, so we do too. The maker tags it creepy, atmospheric and psychological horror, and it is built to be played in one sitting.

It suits players who like short first-person horror set at home at night, such as Fears to Fathom or Bad Parenting, and want something free and quick to finish with the lights off.

Tips

  • Play in the dark with headphones, as it is meant to be atmospheric.
  • Read every bit of on-screen text; the maker added more after the jam to make clear what to do.
  • On a Mac, if the download will not run, the maker suggests the itch.io app or the alternative Mac build on the page.
