What frightens You are trapped in a dream of a small apartment at night and can only escape by photographing anomalies, places or events that deviate from reality, with a camera. There are 81 of them, from objects that are not quite right to a giant face at the window, and in Nightmare Mode an hour may pass with no anomaly at all, so you never know if you have missed one.

Content: head bob and motion blur (can be turned off).

False Dream is a short first-person anomaly-hunting horror game. Trapped in a dream of a dark apartment, you walk its rooms with a torch and a camera, and photograph each thing that deviates from reality to find your way back. Normal Mode takes about 20 minutes to an hour and a half.

About False Dream

False Dream is a game by TenkaiGames, released on Steam in January 2024 in English and Japanese. It is built in Unreal Engine 5, and its realistic small apartment uses Lumen lighting.

You find yourself trapped in a dream. The way out is to capture anomalies, places or phenomena that deviate from reality, with a camera. You walk through a one-room apartment at night, its entrance, bathroom, kitchen and bedroom lit by your torch, and as the clock moves on you look for what has changed and frame it in your camera. There are 81 anomalies in all.

In Normal Mode an anomaly always occurs at each time. In Nightmare Mode sometimes none does, and you cannot tell whether there is nothing to find or you have simply not found it yet; the maker suggests starting with Normal Mode. A radio helps you find anomalies, though those it reveals are not saved. Captured anomalies are kept even if you stop partway.

One clear of Normal Mode takes about 20 minutes to an hour and a half, and finding every anomaly takes more than three hours. It suits players of The Exit 8 and I'm on Observation Duty who want the same close watching in a dream apartment.

How to play False Dream

  1. Walk through the dream apartment with your torch.
  2. Compare each room with what a normal apartment should look like.
  3. When you spot something wrong, frame it with the camera and take a photo.
  4. Capture an anomaly at each time to move closer to waking up.
  5. Try Nightmare Mode, where some times have no anomaly at all.

Tips

  • Start with Normal Mode, as the maker suggests.
  • Anomalies found with the radio are not saved, so use it sparingly.
  • Turn head bob and motion blur to 0 in the settings if 3D makes you queasy.
  • If it crashes, update your graphics driver or lower the graphics settings.
