About Broken Through

Broken Through is a first-person psychological horror game by Jordan Lindgren, who publishes as JordiBoi and also made The Shopping List and Ignited Entry. He made it at 16 in Unreal Engine and released it on itch.io in September 2022 as a free, name-your-own-price download for Windows.

Seven years ago your best friend, Leo Williams, disappeared without a trace, and he has now been declared dead. His belongings have come to you, and something about them is off. Something says he is still out there, and he is not the only one.

You walk and drive through ordinary night places, a quiet road with Pass With Care signs, a lit-up convenience store, a living room with a news bulletin on the TV, and interact with what you find while dialogue moves the story on. These places slide into foggy fields, red-lit streets and glitching neon roads, framed by rounded CRT edges and VHS overlays.

The fear is dreamlike and slow: missing posters, news bulletins and familiar places that warp the longer you stay. Its maker calls it a story-rich experience that blends terrifying scenarios with dreamish visuals and a nostalgic retro theme.

It takes about an hour and suits players who like short, atmospheric PSX-style horror built around a mystery more than chases.

How to play Broken Through

1. Download it from its itch.io page for Windows; it is free, or name your own price.
2. Walk with WASD and look around with the mouse.
3. Press E to interact with objects and Leo's belongings, and Space to continue dialogue.
4. Follow where the story takes you, on foot and by car, through each scene to the end.

Tips

• Use the slider under Esc to set mouse sensitivity before you start.
• Look closely at posters, screens and objects; much of the story is in them.
• Play at night with headphones; the sound design carries a lot of the dread.
• Some drives between places are long, so settle in rather than rush.
