What frightens You climb down thousands of metres into a dark, ancient megastructure on a grappling hook, and something huge is hunting you on the way: players describe a giant centipede whose approach you hear before you see it, pushing you to risk faster, more dangerous drops.

Content: heights and falling, a giant creature, loud sounds.

Idols of Ash is a short first-person horror climbing game. With a grappling hook and physics-based climbing, you descend thousands of metres into a dark, ancient place, while a huge monster hunts you and every hurried move risks a deadly fall.

About Idols of Ash

Idols of Ash is made by Leafy Games and came out on Steam for Windows, Mac and Linux in April 2026, and on itch.io. It is small and cheap, and its makers put a normal run at 20 to 40 minutes, with harder modes and extra content to unlock afterwards.

The idea is simple: you are at the top of a vast, ancient structure and you must get to the bottom. You climb and clamber with your hands and swing and drop on a grappling hook, testing angles and learning how your weight carries. The places you pass through are pale canyons, round pits, caverns of standing stones and dark shafts drawn in a rough, pixelated style.

You are not alone. A huge monster hunts you through the structure; players describe a giant centipede whose sound fills them with dread as it comes. Because it keeps coming, you are pushed to move faster than is safe, and a fall can kill you as surely as the creature can.

Players praise the climbing, the sound and the creature, and some note that it is very short and that the hunter matters less once you master the movement. It suits players who like a tight, tense short game and movement that takes skill.

How to play Idols of Ash

  1. Climb and clamber down the structure in first person.
  2. Fire the grappling hook at surfaces to swing, hang and lower yourself.
  3. Keep moving: a huge creature is hunting you, and staying still lets it close in.
  4. Pick your drops carefully; a long fall can kill you.
  5. After finishing, try the unlocked harder modes.

Tips

  • Learn the grapple's swing on the early slopes before the chase gets serious.
  • Listen for the creature; its sound warns you when it is close.
  • Faster is not always better; a bad fall costs more than a careful drop.
  • Play with headphones.
