What frightens A struggling slasher-film writer in 1985 Hollywood hunts for a vanished director's lost last film, said to be the scariest ever made. The trail leads through B-movie studios and effects workshops to religious cults and a small town called Serena with a dark reputation, and the story grows darker, from quiet unease to the gory depths of Hell.

Content: gore, violence, bad language, drug use.

Nightmare Frames is a pixel art point-and-click horror adventure by Postmodern Adventures. In 1985, slasher screenwriter Alan Goldberg is hired by an eccentric millionaire to find a vanished horror director's lost final film, and the search takes him from Hollywood to a haunted town and further down.

About Nightmare Frames

Nightmare Frames is a point-and-click supernatural thriller by Postmodern Adventures, the studio of the author of Urban Witch Story and Billy Masters Was Right. It came out on Steam in June 2022, in English and Spanish.

It is 1985 and Alan Goldberg is a slasher movie screenwriter whose career has stalled. Helen Westmore, an eccentric millionaire, offers him anything he wants if he can find the last, unreleased work of the horror director Edward Keller, a film said to be the scariest ever made. Alan follows the trail through B-movie production companies, special effects workshops and religious cults to Serena, a small town whose dark reputation began when Keller was last seen there.

It plays as a classic point-and-click adventure: you walk Alan through more than 80 locations, talk to some 50 characters, and solve inventory puzzles by picking up items and using them in the right place. The horror builds as the investigation goes on, from ambient dread in a quiet town to the gore the makers promise in Hell itself. The detailed pixel art and the synthwave score, with a diner radio playing licensed tracks, keep it rooted in the 1980s.

It suits players who like story-heavy adventure games and horror films of that decade, and who prefer working out puzzles to running from monsters. The same studio later made the Lovecraftian detective adventure The Dark Rites of Arkham.

How to play Nightmare Frames

  3. Pick up every item you can; they go into your inventory.
  4. Use items on people and places, or on each other, to solve puzzles and open new places.
  5. Talk to characters about everything to get the clues that point to the next step.

Tips

  • Look at objects before using them; the description often hints at what they are for.
  • When you are stuck, go back to people you already met and talk to them again.
  • Try combining items in your inventory, not just using them on the world.
  • Stop by the diner to listen to the synthwave radio.
