What frightens You arrive late at a Romanian count's gothic castle in 1912 to find your family locked in as the count's prisoners, and must search hundreds of rooms, laid out differently each game, while vampires and their creatures leap at you from the dark.

Content: jumpscares, violence.

Nosferatu: The Wrath of Malachi is a first-person horror shooter from 2003 by Idol FX. In 1912 your family is trapped in the castle of a Romanian count, and you search its rooms with flintlocks, holy water and stakes while vampires attack shock style. The castle's layout and the places of the people in it change every time you play.

About Nosferatu: The Wrath of Malachi

Nosferatu: The Wrath of Malachi is a first-person horror game by the Swedish studio Idol FX, first released in 2003 and now sold on Steam and GOG.

It is a misty evening in 1912. The Pattersons, a poor British noble family, arrive at castle Malachi, home of a wealthy Romanian count, three days before their eldest daughter Rebecca is to marry the count's son. You are her brother, arriving later from the Stockholm Olympics where you fenced for Britain. By the time you get there the doors have been locked behind your family and they are the count's prisoners.

The castle has hundreds of rooms, and a random architecture generator changes its layout and the places of the characters every time you play. You can explore its parts in any order. Enemies jump out from everywhere, and you fight them with classic vampire slayers' tools such as holy water, crucifixes and wooden stakes, or with old firearms like flintlock pistols and muskets. Some vampires can only be killed with particular weapons, so you have to think about what you carry.

The fear comes from the shocks and from never knowing the castle: dark corridors, fog, grainy film-like images and a score built to keep you on edge. It suits players who like older first-person horror and gothic vampire stories, and who do not mind dated graphics.

How to play Nosferatu: The Wrath of Malachi

  1. Buy it on Steam or GOG for Windows and start a new game.
  2. Enter castle Malachi, whose layout is generated anew for this game.
  3. Explore the castle's wings in any order to find your family and the weapons hidden in it.
  4. Fight vampires with holy water, crucifixes, stakes and old firearms, choosing the weapon each enemy needs.
  5. Keep searching until you have dealt with the count and his household.

Tips

  • Some vampires can only be killed with a specific weapon, so keep a mix of holy weapons and firearms rather than relying on one.
  • Since the layout changes each game, a route learned on one play will not hold on the next; explore carefully.
  • Expect enemies to jump out from anywhere, especially in dark rooms and doorways.
