What frightens A scavenger looting an old country house in Prefield, a mining town turned ghost town, finds he has stepped into a nightmare: with only a flashlight, he moves through dark, claustrophobic rooms among blood, corpses and occult signs, with something lurking inside.

Content: blood, dead bodies, occult themes, violence, references to suicide.

Scauage is a free, short first-person horror game in PS1-style graphics. As a scavenger in the dying mining town of Prefield, you break into an old country house to loot it and uncover its dark secrets by flashlight, with puzzles and several endings.

About Scauage

Scauage is a short horror game by KREIDPIX, released free on Steam in December 2024 and also offered on itch.io. Its pixelated PS1-era look is meant to bring back 1960s America, and its maker builds it around paranoia and claustrophobia.

Prefield was a busy town built around nearby mines. When the mines ran dry, families left, and it became a ghost town known for marauders and scavengers, with only squatters and the homeless staying behind. You are one of the scavengers, and an old two-story country house looks like it still holds something worth taking.

Inside, it soon becomes a nightmare. You search the dark rooms by the light of a realistic flashlight, collecting valuables and hidden treasures, and solving unconventional puzzles that need thinking outside the box. The 3D sound fills the silence with things you cannot see. The decisions you make lead to different endings, and the store warns of blood, corpses, occult themes, violence and references to suicide.

It suits players who want a compact, free and very dark house to explore, in the line of short PS1-style horror.

How to play Scauage

  1. Enter the old country house and search its rooms with your flashlight.
  2. Collect valuables and the items you need to get further in.
  3. Solve the house's puzzles to open new rooms.
  4. Make your choices carefully; they decide which ending you reach.

Tips

  • Turn the brightness up a little; the house is very dark.
  • Rotate objects you pick up: some hold clues.
  • Play with headphones; the 3D sound tells you more than the screen.
