What frightens Alone in an empty family house, you clean and sort old belongings while a spirit watches how you treat them; Indonesian taboos decide what is rude, and rudeness brings the White Lady closer, and even a clump of hair on the bathroom floor might be hers.

Content: jumpscares.

Pamali is a first-person horror game from the Indonesian studio Storytale, built on the taboos of Indonesian folklore. In the main story, Jaka returns to his family's empty house to sell it, and how he treats the house and what lives in it decides what happens and how it ends.

About Pamali: Indonesian Folklore Horror

Pamali: Indonesian Folklore Horror was made by Storytale, a team founded by students from Bandung, and released on Steam in December 2018. Pamali means taboo, and the game is built around the unwritten rules of Indonesian culture: what you should not do, say or touch in a house where something lives.

The base game is the first folklore, The White Lady. Jaka has come back to his hometown to sell his old family house. As he cleans, packs and fixes it up, throwing out his family's things and making careless remarks, odd things start to happen, and he learns that he is not alone in the house and that his family kept a secret. Three more folklores, The Tied Corpse, The Little Devil and The Hungry Witch, are sold as add-on stories, each with its own setting and spirit.

There is no combat and little running. You explore in first person, pick up and examine objects, and choose what Jaka says about them: praise a painting or mock it, call the hair on the bathroom floor disgusting or wonder whose it is. Those choices add up. You can leave the moment you arrive, sell the house without disturbing anything, or go looking for the entity, and each playthrough unlocks more of the lore behind the family and the White Lady.

Players describe the fear as tension more than jumpscares: the feeling that everything you do is being judged by something you cannot see. Some found hunting every ending repetitive and met bugs along the way. It suits players who like slow, quiet haunted house horror and want ghosts from outside the usual Western and Japanese stories.

How to play Pamali: Indonesian Folklore Horror

  1. Walk through the house in first person and look around each room.
  2. Pick up and examine objects, and choose what Jaka says or does with them.
  3. Do the chores the house needs, cleaning and sorting, while watching how the house reacts.
  4. Decide whether to leave, sell or go looking for what lives there; each choice leads toward a different ending.
  5. Replay to reach other endings and unlock more of the story behind the family and the spirit.

Tips

  • Treat the house and its belongings with respect if you want a quieter night; rudeness has consequences.
  • Read the notes you find; they explain the customs the game is built on.
  • Try the opposite choice on a second run, since many endings only open after a different reaction.
  • The base game holds The White Lady; the other three folklores are separate add-ons on Steam.
