Home Sweet Home is a first-person horror game from Thailand, inspired by Thai myths. Tim, whose wife has disappeared, wakes one night in an unknown building and is hunted by a vengeful female spirit; unarmed, he has to hide, sneak and solve puzzles to find out what happened.

About Home Sweet Home

Home Sweet Home was made by the Thai studio YGGDRAZIL GROUP and released on Steam in 2017, then on PlayStation 4, with a PlayStation VR mode, and Xbox One in 2018. Its settings and story draw on Thai horror and folklore, from wooden stilt houses and spirit shrines to a police station and a school.

Tim has been grieving since his wife vanished. One night he wakes up not in his home but in a strange, decaying building, and a female spirit begins to hunt him. She is a ghost in a school uniform who walks the halls with a box cutter, and if she sees you she runs at you. You cannot fight her. You hide in lockers, under beds and behind doors, wait for her footsteps to pass and move on, while the house hides notes, drawings and objects that piece together the secret behind your wife's disappearance.

Between the chases come puzzles and investigation, and other spirits from Thai legend make their appearance. The game is known for intense jumpscares and for how good it is in VR, where the hiding spots feel very small.

It suits players who like hide-and-seek horror such as Outlast or Amnesia and want something drawn from Asian ghost stories rather than Western ones. A sequel, Home Sweet Home Episode 2, continues the story.

How to play Home Sweet Home

  1. Explore in first person, picking up notes, keys and objects and examining them for clues.
  2. Listen for the spirit's footsteps and the scrape of her blade; when she comes, get out of sight.
  3. Hide in lockers, cupboards and under furniture, and wait until she has gone before you move.
  4. Solve the puzzles each area sets to open the way forward and learn what happened to your wife.

Tips

  • Know where the nearest hiding place is before you start on a puzzle.
  • Walk rather than run when she is near; noise draws her.
  • Read everything you find; many notes hold puzzle answers.
