Shrine II is a free retro first-person shooter by Scumhead, made in the Doom engine and the sequel to Shrine. Tusk, the skinless monstrosity, fights through 32 levels of a Gothic Lovecraftian world with over 20 weapons and 6 bosses. The store puts its focus on atmosphere and exploration.
About Shrine II
Shrine II was made by Scumhead, with Mengo also credited as developer, and released free on Steam in September 2020, a few months after the first Shrine. It is also on itch.io, where you can name your own price. Like the first game it is built on the Doom engine.
You again play Tusk, the skinless monstrosity, against a nightmarish eldritch horde in a retro Gothic Lovecraftian world. The sequel is much bigger: over 20 weapons, 30 kinds of enemy, 6 bosses and 32 levels that the maker calls challenging but fair, with secrets around every corner.
The store puts its focus on atmosphere and exploration. The screenshots show a dead tree on a grey plain, a dense green forest, a gothic square with a crucified figure above a heap of bodies, a cave whose walls are curled-up bodies, and a dead carnival under a purple sky where robed figures hold up grinning masks on poles. The store warns that, though cartoonish, it is full of blood and gore.
It suits players who finished Shrine and want more, and anyone who likes grotesque, strange retro shooters such as Dusk or Cultic. It is more unsettling and gross than frightening.
How to play Shrine II
- Download it free from Steam, or from itch.io for whatever you choose to pay.
- Move and shoot like a classic Doom game, clearing the eldritch enemies in each area.
- Collect new weapons as you go; there are over 20, and some suit certain monsters better.
- Explore off the main path for secrets, and beat the bosses to move on through the 32 levels.
