The Incident at Galley House is a horror mystery and deduction game from Evil Trout, the makers of The Roottrees are Dead. In 1936 something terrible happened at Galley House; years later a strange machine lets you replay echoes of that night, and you must name every person in it and work out what they did. It is a remastered, fully voiced and illustrated version of William Rous's text game Type Help.

About The Incident at Galley House

The Incident at Galley House is a detective and deduction game by William Rous and Evil Trout Inc., released on Steam on 14 July 2026 for Windows, Mac and Linux. It remasters and expands Type Help, Rous's text-based browser game, with a fully illustrated visual novel presentation, full voice acting, a 3D interface for moving through memories, a new soundtrack and new puzzles.

On Sunday the 7th of March, 1936, a group of locals walk up the muddy track to Galley House, which they believe has stood empty for decades, and find the bloody aftermath of something horrific inside. The crime scene was cleared away and nobody ever learned what happened that night. Many years later you have a peculiar machine that lets you listen in on echoes of the past.

Play is about observation and logic. The machine shows you scenes from that night, with the people in them only numbered silhouettes at first. You step through rooms and times, listen to what is said, read clues such as ash on clothing or a missing ring, and fill in names and roles on a terminal of people, locations and a timeline.

The horror is slow and psychological. You know from the start that the night ends in death, and following people through a dark house in the hours before they died is unsettling even though you can never be hurt. Critics have noted that most deaths are shown without visible gore, but there are bodies and violence. It suits players who like The Roottrees are Dead, deduction puzzles or creepy mystery stories more than chases and jump scares.

How to play The Incident at Galley House

  1. Buy The Incident at Galley House on Steam for Windows, Mac or Linux.
  2. Use the machine to open an echo of the night and step through the scenes in each room.
  3. Listen to what each numbered person says and does, and note where and when they appear.
  4. Fill in names, roles and details for each person on the terminal.
  5. Work through the echoes until every person and the events of the night are accounted for.

Tips

  • Keep track of who enters and leaves each room and at what time; the timeline is the backbone of most deductions.
  • Look closely at clothes, voices and small details such as smells or missing objects.
  • Start with the people you are most sure of; each confirmed name narrows down the rest.
  • Take notes on paper if it helps; the game expects you to hold several threads at once.
