What frightens A small girl in a yellow raincoat wakes in a vast, decaying mansion where everything wants her dead: falling floors, traps, cramped rooms and grotesque residents like a crouching old man among filthy baths, and one mistake ends her.

Content: character deaths, creepy imagery.

Very Little Nightmares is a mobile puzzle adventure set in the world of Little Nightmares. You tap to guide a small girl in a yellow raincoat through the rooms of a hostile mansion, solving puzzles and avoiding traps and enemies, in a prequel story to the first game.

About Very Little Nightmares

Very Little Nightmares was made by Alike Studio and published by Bandai Namco, as a mobile spin-off of Tarsier Studios' Little Nightmares. It came out on iPhone and iPad in May 2019 and on Android in December 2019. The store page calls it an original prequel story to the events of Little Nightmares.

The Girl in the Yellow Raincoat wakes up in an unknown mansion, the Nest, a place where everything wants to see her dead. Each screen is a room seen from above at an angle, like a little diorama: a lift hanging over a broken floor, a cluttered workshop, a store room with a creaking door, a mountain of rubbish under a crane. You tap where she should go and what she should touch, and work out how to get her through alive.

The horror is in the details and in her fragility. She is tiny and the house is huge, the residents are grotesque, and a wrong tap can send her to a sudden death. It is creepy rather than terrifying, with the series' mix of cute and grim.

Critics were mixed on its puzzles and controls, while players on the App Store rate it highly. It suits fans of Little Nightmares who want a short dose of its world on a phone, and players who like gentle, creepy puzzle games.

How to play Very Little Nightmares

  2. Study each room to find the way out and the hazards in it.
  3. Solve the room's puzzle, often by moving objects or triggering mechanisms in the right order.
  4. Avoid the enemies and traps; one mistake can kill her.
