What frightens You are Mono, a boy with a paper bag on his head, crossing a world twisted by a signal from a distant tower. A Hunter stalks the woods with a shotgun, a Teacher stretches her neck after you through the school, porcelain-headed patients crawl in a dark hospital, and the people of the Pale City stand frozen before their TVs. You have almost no way to fight back, so each encounter is a hide, a sneak

Content: disturbing imagery, child in peril, jumpscares, violence.

A side-on puzzle platformer of hiding and fleeing from Tarsier Studios, the sequel to Little Nightmares. You play Mono, who travels with Six through a forest, a school, a hospital and a city of TV-struck people toward a tower sending out a strange signal. Its grotesque adults hunt you, and you have almost nothing to fight them with.

About Little Nightmares II

Little Nightmares II is a puzzle platformer from Tarsier Studios, published by Bandai Namco in February 2021. You play Mono, a small boy with a paper bag over his head, who finds Six, the girl in the yellow raincoat from the first game, and travels with her toward the Signal Tower, a structure on the horizon whose broadcast has twisted everyone it reaches.

The camera watches from the side, but every room has depth: you climb, crawl, push crates, pull levers and work out how to get past whatever lives there. Six follows you, helps with puzzles that need two hands and takes your hand when you call her. Mono can pick up a few heavy objects, such as a hammer or a pipe, for short, clumsy fights with small enemies, but most threats can only be avoided.

Each area has its own nightmare. The Hunter in the wilderness, the Teacher in a school of porcelain-faced bullies, the patients and the Doctor in the hospital, and the Viewers of the Pale City who stand transfixed by their screens. When one notices you the game becomes a short chase where one grab ends it, followed by a quick restart from a nearby checkpoint. TVs let Mono reach into the signal itself, and the story is told almost without words.

It is longer and more varied than the first game, with bigger set pieces and more chases, but the same mood: being tiny and powerless in a place made by and for grotesque adults. It suits players who want atmosphere, light puzzles and stealth over combat. It runs on PC, PlayStation, Xbox and Switch, with an Enhanced Edition on current consoles.

How to play Little Nightmares II

  1. Buy Little Nightmares II on Steam, the PlayStation Store, Xbox or the Nintendo eShop.
  2. Start as Mono and move right through each area, climbing, jumping and crawling to find the way on.
  3. Call Six to you when a puzzle needs two people, such as a boost up to a ledge or a heavy object to move.
  4. Grab a heavy object when you need it and swing it with careful timing; it is slow and every miss is dangerous.
  5. When a hunter sees you, run for cover or the next doorway and keep moving until it loses you.
  6. Use the TVs you find to tune into the signal and open the way forward.

Tips

  • Swings with a heavy object are slow: start the swing early, before an enemy reaches you.
  • Many enemies react to noise, so walk rather than run when you are close to them.
  • Look into the background of each room; the way on is often deeper in the scene.
  • Glitching remains hidden in some rooms unlock an ending scene if you collect them all; look for them on a second play.
  • Collect hats along the way if you want to dress Mono and Six differently.
